Dzimitry Yuran, assistant professor of arts and communications, presented Fake News, Open Minds, and Media Literacy on Jan. 26 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brevard in West Melbourne.
Yuran was invited to present after church members saw an article in Florida Tech Magazine about fake news and misinformation and thought the topic would be worth sharing with the full congregation.
In his presentation, Yuran emphasized the importance of purposeful and thoughtful news consumption, while addressing what fake news is, how pervasive it is, why it is propagated, and how to defend ourselves from believing and misinterpreting potentially false information. He covered ways in which people are falsely led to believe things by their own minds, known as the Mandela Effect, and how this can lead to the spread of misinformation. He also addressed the news media’s role in the proliferation of bias.
