Recent Graduate Participates in Space Vehicle Research Training

Tatsunari Tomiyama, who graduted in May with a master’s degree in aviation human factors from the College of Aeronautics, was chosen to participate in a unique endeavor called the Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere (PoSSUM) Scientist Astronaut Qualification Program.

Designed and instructed by former NASA astronaut instructors and PoSSUM team scientists, the program provides the skills required to effectively conduct research on the next generation of commercial space vehicles. It combined three weeks of webinar instruction followed by one week of intensive training, which concluded in early October.

Tomiyama experienced high-G training, crew resource management training, spacesuit training, high-altitude training and biometric analysis.
