Rodrigo Meirelles van Vliet, a sophomore majoring in civil engineering, was awarded a $3,000 CIC/UPS Scholarship provided by the Florida Independent College Fund and its national partner, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in Washington, D.C.
He is one of 30 students at private Florida institutions to receive scholarships as part of a $90,000 effort from CIC. In total, the group provided more than $1.6 million nationwide for scholarships “to make to make private colleges and universities more affordable and accessible to underserved students.”
Born in Sau Paulo, Brazil, van Vliet moved to Winter Park, Florida, when he was 16, finished high school and then enrolled at Florida Tech. He expects to enter the workforce after graduation before pursuing a Master’s degree or Ph.D. His ultimate professional aspiration is to work with large structures, such as sports stadia, though he said he has recently become interested in the design of skate parks.
