Leave Green Move-Out Program a Success

Leave Green, an initiative that was born as a senior design project and first implemented on a small scale in spring 2015, helped improve recycling efforts from students moving out by diverting and donating usable materials that would otherwise end up in the county landfill. In a push to expand the program’s impact, Residence Life and the Sustainability Office expanded the program campus-wide.

For spring 2017, the university partnered with Goodwill Industries of Central Florida, CITA Rescue Mission and Daily Bread of Melbourne. The program yielded 3,300 pounds of goods for Goodwill, 500 pounds of furniture and electronics for CITA and 300 pounds of nonperishable food items and cleaning suppliers for Daily Bread. Additionally, it diverted 400 pounds of e-waste.

In total, Leave Green diverted 4,530 pounds from the landfill.
