Florida Tech’s Ocean Engineering team won 2nd place and a $4,000 team scholarship in the 2017 Cuba Infrastructure Scholarship Competition. The team was comprised of Erwin Horvath, Ebrahim Bootwala, Alex Ortiz and Julie McCarthy and advised by Stephen Wood, interim department head of the Department of Ocean Engineering and Sciences. The student design competition, organized and sponsored by the Association of Cuban-American Engineers and the Cuban-American Association of Civil Engineers, has student teams formulate and present a project of their choice on Cuba’s public infrastructure that relates to the engineering field in transportation, water resources, power/ telecommunications or healthcare. A total of 18 teams participated. The Florida Tech team’s project was the Magnetic Wave Energy Device, or M-WED.
