Nearly two dozen students spent three days in March in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, competing in the American Society of Civil Engineers Southeast Regional Competitions. Overcoming challenges both technical (the Florida Tech team’s 20-foot steel bridge failed during set-up) and medical (a student had to be taken to an urgent care clinic to fend off an infection) the group and advisors Paul Cosentino, Nakin Suksawang and Albert Bleakley, and technician Tim Martin, managed to compete in numerous events. Those included concrete canoe, balsa wood bridge, lightweight geotechnical fill, surveying, concrete corn hole and concrete beams. There were 15 events in total.
The student participants were Quinn Duffy, Josh Perry, Nick Miller, Ethan Samberg, McKenzie Clark, Alex Thierer, Malaak Araujo, Lara Eremita, Christopher Laurore, Joshua Michalski, Samuel Moses, Krysti Patrick, Christopher Peterson, Spenser Puffenbarger, Derek Ratcliffe, Sara Schulte, Alex Thierer, Zimeena Rasheed, Amanda Johnson, Justine Marchal, Marcus Mancini and Lily Buth.
