Academic Support Center Earns Certification for Tutor Training Program

Staff and tutors at the university\’s Academic Support Center.

The Academic Support Center\’s Peer Tutoring Practicum earned Level I program certification from the College Reading & Learning Association and International Tutor Training Program Certification for its peer tutor training program. This internationally-recognized certification allows the Academic Support Center to issue Level 1 Certified Tutor certificates to all peer tutors who complete the training.

The Academic Support Center employs as many as 30 peer tutors each academic year, and peer tutor certification is an integral component of the training process.

Associate Director Veronica Giguere authors and administrates the course during the fall and spring semesters. Office Manager Michael Sanchez and ASC receptionist Marge Richardson oversee individual tutoring appointments and group study sessions. This fall, 23 tutors are working torward their certification.

The Academic Support Center provides peer tutoring and writing assistance for all undergraduate students at Florida Tech. The center also participates in community outreach efforts by tutoring elementary, middle and high school students. All tutoring services are free.
