Ivica Kostanic, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering in the College of Engineering, won a 3.5-mile open ocean swim race from an island in the Adriatic Sea to the Croatian coast this summer, beating a small field of competitors half his age.

The 46-year-old, a native of what is now Croatia, said swimming is a “natural talent.” He trained for three weeks in advance of this summer’s competition. This year marked his fourth swim of the span, but his first as part of an organized competition.

Kostanic spends one month in Croatia each summer.
