Florida Tech turned out at least 100-strong for the Hands Across the Indian River Lagoon gathering Sept. 29. The Panther Trolley trundled twice to the Melbourne Causeway for the awareness event. It transported about 70 of the faculty, staff and students, including a group from Alpha Phi Omega.
The effort was initiated by Geoff Swain, marine and environmental systems (DMES), with broad support from Robert Weaver, College of Engineering, and Gary Zarillo, DMES. Students Kelli Zargiel and Holly Sweat also took leadership roles.
Some members of the Florida Tech contingent were pictured behind their banner in Florida Today and NBC TV stories. Students designed the banner and the Office of Research covered its costs and trolley transportation.
Senator Thad Altman (16th District) will seek funding during the next legislative session to address the issues impacting the health of the lagoon.
