The Florida Tech men’s basketball team and head coach Billy Mims took part in the National School Lunch and Read to Succeed programs in mid-October.
Mims and ten players spent three hours helping to feed 552 children, from kindergarten to 6th grade, at Jupiter Elementary in Palm Bay. “The students were shocked and amazed to see the very tall basketball players serving them food, and their smiles helped make the community service project even more worthwhile,” Mims said.
In a separate event, Mims and five Panther players spent time with 6th graders at Viera Charter School, where they discussed the importance of reading and shared stories about some of their favorite books to the students, including classics like Green Eggs and Ham, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and the Harry Potter series.
“This was a great experience, not only for the students but also the players,” Mims said. “Getting out around the county and into our local schools is such a great way for our players to give back to our community.
