A group from Florida Tech attended the 2018 NASA Day of Remembrance at Kennedy Space Center on Jan. 25. At the event, NASA and others paid tribute to the crews of Apollo 1 and space shuttles Challenger and Columbia, as well as other NASA colleagues who lost their lives “while furthering the cause of exploration and discovery,” according to the agency.
The formal program included speakers, videos and montages of fallen astronauts who are honored on this day. After the presentation, a memorial wreath was placed at the Space Mirror Memorial.
Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin participated in placing the flowers. Aldrin, Florida Tech Research Professor of Aeronautics and Senior Faculty Advisor for the university’s Aldrin Space Institute, joined other attendees from Florida Tech. They were Daniel Batcheldor, Saida Caballero-Nieves, Marco Carvalho, Ondrej Doule, Shermineh Rostami Fairchild, De Vere Kiss, Hamid Rassoul and Winston Scott.
