Greg Peebles, advisor to the Florida Tech Student Rocket Society, served as a judge for the 2017 Spaceport America Cup in La Cruces, New Mexico, in June. Peebles, who has special expertise in hybrid-bipropellant liquid fuel, helped judge contestants on the overall construction, payload and fuel type of the rockets. Due to federal restrictions on the importation of solid rocket fuel, Peebles was tasked with judging nearly half the international competitors who were forced to develop liquid-based rocket fuel.
The event, hosted by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association and the Commercial Spaceflight Federation (CSF), included over 110 teams from colleges and universities around the world. The CSF is an industry partner with the Federal Aviation Administration Center of Excellence for Commercial Space Transportation. Florida Tech is one of the nine member universities in Center of Excellence.
