Florida Tech hosted 20 university students from the Republic of China (Taiwan) for a three-week American Studies Institute July 18–Aug. 5. The students, who attend five different Taiwan universities, took two mini-courses in United States history and foreign policy and made area tours.
Robert Taylor, head of the department of humanities and communication, organized the program.
Presented by the department’s Center for the Study of Critical Languages, the program sprang from the second Taiwan-Florida Higher Education Conference (TFHEC) held at Tunghai University in July 2010. It was attended by a Florida delegation led by President Anthony J. Catanese.
Pei-feng Hsu coordinates the Taiwan student program at Florida Tech and the TFHEC. He brought an additional six young women, Taiwan Youth Ambassadors from Wenzao Ursuline College, in early August for a short visit. They were accompanied by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Director General Ray Mou.
